The wife of Attorney General Yehuda Weinstein was questioned by Population and Immigration Authority officials a few days ago over allegations that she employed an illegal migrant worker at the couple's home, Ynet reported Tuesday.
Aviva Weinstein said she had no knowledge as to the foreign worker's whereabouts.
The Authority said that if the worker is still in Israel it would not be difficult to track him down.
Aviva Weinstein may be summoned for another round of questioning, but it remains unclear whether an indictment will be filed against her.
At the beginning of the year Weinstein's office asked State Prosecutor Moshe Lador to examine the circumstances surrounding the unlawful employment of a foreign worker at the Weinstein's home.
Attorney Raz Nazri, Weinstein’s senior aide, said at the time that “we have already asked the state attorney to handle the matter, in the same manner that is standard for other such situations, with the relevant people and institutions and, of course, without any interference by the office of the attorney general.”
According to recent reports, prior to his appointment as attorney general Weinstein illegally employed a foreign worker from India for about a year.
The Justice Ministry responded by saying: “It is true that in the past, a foreign worker from India was employed by the Weinstein family. His work was stopped in 2009, before Weinstein was appointed attorney general.”
It added that when Weinstein’s wife hired him, the house-cleaner was in Israel legally.
Earlier this week an indictment was filed against Defense Minister Ehud Barak's wife, Nili Priel, who is suspected of illegally employing a foreign worker at the couple's Tel Aviv apartment.
The indictment, filed by Population and Immigration Authority with the Tel Aviv District Labor Court, says Priel violated the Labor law.
