Israel fears bin Laden revenge attacks

Officials boost security measures, fear attacks on US targets following bin Laden assassination

High alert in Israel: Security officials are preparing for the possibility that radical Islamists will attempt to strike American targets and interests in Israel to avenge the killing of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.


Following an assessment of the latest developments, the Israel Police Head of Operations, Nissim Mor, instructed district intelligence officers to map out all American missions and institutions, including the private residences of embassy staff and community centers affiliated with the American community in Israel.

Police will also be giving preference to calls pertaining to incidents in these areas. Moreover, police officers and volunteers will be ordered to boost their patrols and show increased alertness around the relevant sites.

Mor also instructed police to prepare an operational response for contending with scenarios of riots or protests following the killing of bin Laden. In addition, each police district will contact security officers at the various American missions in order to coordinate joint operations and assess the situation.


At this time, officials do not possess concrete intelligence information pointing to plots to hit any specific American targets in Israel.


Meanwhile, New York City authorities briefly shut down a street in Times Square after investigating a suspicious package on Monday which turned out not to be dangerous, the city's fire department said.

The city is on high security alert after the killing bin Laden in Pakistan.
