Lifshitz was born in Kibbutz Givat HaShlosha in 1936. His parents were amongst the founders of the kibbutz. He served in the IDF alongside former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in the special forces commando Unit 101.

His early work was characterized by a lyrical abstraction style. In the early 1960s he changed directions into figurative art. He never received formal training but studied briefly with artist Haim Kave.
