PA workers threaten strike

Public servants in West Bank claim they have not received full salaries, threaten to start strike on Tuesaday

Bassam Zakharna, the Palestinian Authority's workers union chairman announced Sunday that the public sector at the West Bank will open an indefinite general strike on Tuesday to protest the delay of pay.

Zakharna announced that the union is suspending talks with the government claiming that the Treasury had stopped updating the union about the salary crisis. "It's a fabricated crisis and the government's policy is meant to frustrate the workers," he said.

The step comes amid an acute financial crisis in the West Bank. PA workers are under immense pressure at this time of year as the Ramadan fast sets in Sunday night. Muslims will mark Eid al-Fitr at the end of August. Households spend more on food during this time of time prompting outrage over the delay of salaries.

The financial crisis has also prompted an Arab League meeting. Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has repeatedly urged Arab states to assist the PA in light of its financial crisis.

This is the second time the PA has delayed pay for public servants.
