Businessman-philanthropist Dan David dies

David set up foundation to annually award $1 million prizes to people who have made impact on society; divided his life between Italy, Britain and Israel

Romanian-born businessman Dan David, who set up a foundation to annually award $1 million prizes to people who have made an impact on society, has died at the age of 82.

 

David's son Ariel says his father suffered a brain hemorrhage and passed away Tuesday at a hospital in southwest London.

 

David made his fortune as an early developer of automatic photo machines. He lived between Italy, Britain and Israel.

 

The Dan David Foundation awards three $1 million prizes each year for achievements having an outstanding scientific, technological, cultural or social impact on the world.

 

Winners have included the moviemaking brothers Joel and Ethan Coen, Al Gore, Amos Oz, Tony Blair and Yo-Yo Ma.
