Turks say no to Israeli carpets
A Turkish company has canceled an order of two containers of carpets from Israel's
Carmel Carpets, saying it can't sell Israeli products at this time.
Each container is said to be worth some NIS 100,000 (about $26,700). The Bytex CEO asked to cancel the order for fear it would cause him financial damage and tarnish his image.
"We believe that in the current situation we won't be able to sell carpets made in Israel," Bytex CEO explained.
New Friends
Turkey's rising regional status in Arab world, swept by popular uprisings against dictatorships, translating into booming tourism sector at a time of chill in ties with former ally Israel
Carmel Carpets has been in contact with this client for some 10 years. "We created a friendly, almost family-like relationship," says a Carmel manager. "We approved his request in light of the circumstances and didn't fine him. We hope relations will be resumed in the near future."
The markets were made especially for the Turkish company, and Carmel has decided to put them on sale in its chain of stores for half the price.
The same winds have been blowing from Egypt: Companies supplying marble and stone have informed the Siv Stone company that in light of the situation they plan to stop shipping goods to Israel by land.
"We offered to import the material through the Alexandria Port, but that would not be profitable," says company owner Eran Siv.
