Arab MKs welcome end of Gaddafi era

Knesset members who were once Libya leader's guests are not saddened by his demise; say it proves 'every dictatorship comes to an end'

It was only 18 months ago that a delegation of Arab Knesset members met with Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi and received a royal welcome, but none of them seemed all too upset by the news of his demise.

Gaddafi's brutal 42-year reign in Libya came to its end on Thursday, when he was captured and killed by rebel forces in his hiding place in Sirte.

"Gaddafi continued to humiliate his people even when the masses took to the streets and by doing so he signed his own fate," MK Hanin Zoabi (Balad) told Ynet. "The peoples of the region have decided to end tyranny and anyone who fails to get the message will pay a heavy price.

"The Arab world and ushering in a new era," she added. "An era meant to restore the power to the people."

MK Talab El-Sana (United Arab List-Ta'al) welcomed the news of the Libyan dictator's death: "Gaddafi's elimination is only the first step. Libya still faces many dangers, including the aspirations by colonialist countries salivating over the possibility of regaining control of Libya's oil fields."

Gaddafi, he continued, "was a young revolutionary when he came to power. The absolute power corrupted him and turned him into a tyrant. I hope his demise signals the end of a dark ear in Libya."

El-Sana further expressed hope that the rules of Syrian and Yemen "get the message," adding that "they must respect their people's wish for democracy and freedom."

Balad Chairman Jamal Zahalka said that "while it's good that Gaddafi is gone, it should have been done through a just trial by the Libyan people. This proves that every dictatorship comes to an end. Gaddafi's death reasserts the revolution in the Arab world."
