Hamas: Palestinian cause is winning

Israel facing unprecedented security situation, Egypt won't allow another Gaza war, Islamist group's leader tells Britain's The Independent

The Palestinian cause is triumphing, as Israel faces the worst security situation in its history in the wake of the so-called "Arab Spring", Hamas' leader in Gaza told Britain's The Independent Saturday.

"The Palestinian cause is winning," Ismail Haniyeh was quoted as saying, adding that with the Muslim Brotherhood in the government, Egypt will not besiege the Gaza Strip or support Israel in another war in the area.

"They will not give cover to Israel to launch a war," the Hamas PM in the Strip said, referring to Egypt. "Gaza was a main reason for the Arab Spring. It was people's anger at the regimes that co-operated with Israel and did not recognize the government here."

"Israel is disturbed by this. It knows the strategic environment is changing. Iran is an enemy. Relations are deteriorating with Turkey. With Egypt, they are really cold," Haniyeh said. "Israel is in a security situation they have never been in before. The Palestinians are winning more than anybody else due to what's happening in the Arab countries. That will come out clearly in the future."

Haniyeh slams West

During the interview, Haniyeh also slammed the West for not recognizing Hamas' rule.

"These people asked us to have elections and respect the result of elections, and we did. We did what we were asked to do. Anybody who asks for democracy to be introduced should respect the results of democracy," he said.

Haniyeh also expressed his anger over the fact that his group is still on the US and European terrorist list, despite no longer engaging in suicide bombings, which he refrred to as "martyrdom operations."

"We do not launch wars," he told The Independent. "We are people resisting occupation."
