"You've dedicated your life to Israel's security," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the defense minister at the event, which was also attended, among others, by IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz and Barak's wife Nili Priel.

"If someone would have told me I'd be standing here at the age of 70 and speaking to you all – I would not be certain it could actually happen, for other reasons," Barak told those on hand.

"I served in the army for (decades), and I wish to thank you all, because I did not get everything done with my own (two hands)," he said.

PM Netanyahu told Barak, "We've known each other for 44 years – but it was simpler back in the day. You Ehud, have dealt with Israel's problems for the past 50 years as a soldier, commander and statesman. Your contribution is great."

Barak's actual birthday is February 12.
