Just a few meters from the buildings that were evicted

Illegal construction discovered in Beit El

Just two months after Ulpana's eviction, new illegal structure is taking form only a few meters from the evacuated buildings

During the June evacuation of five contested buildings in Beit El's Ulpana neighborhood, evicted settlers declared they would not be deterred and would continue to build in the area. It is now safe to say that they have kept their promise. A new structure has erected recently, just a few meters from the buildings that were evicted by order of the High Court of Justice.

As the evicted buildings were, the new structure is located on privately owned Palestinian soil. It appears it will not function as a residential structure, but rather as a storage repository, or designated warehouse for one of the factories in the area.

The illegal construction was brought to the attention of the Civil Administration, which issued a warrant to the Beit El Regional Council to put a stop to the construction process immediately.

Nevertheless, progress has been made in construction in recent days. At the same time, the process of the relocation of Ulpana neighborhood buildings is still ongoing.

Dror Etkes, a leftwing activist who has been documenting illegal construction work in the territories, said he was not surprised. "If you're familiar with the settlers' conduct when it comes to land appropriation, you can't really be surprised," he stated. "It seems that in order for these phenomena to stop, the State of Israel would have to undergo brain marrow transplant so as to replace the criminal DNA that has taken over the government."

The chair of the Beit El Regional Council, Moshe Rosenbaum, commented that he was not aware of the structure, or of any structure being constructed in the area of the Ulpana neighborhood. He also noted that he was not aware of a warrant of the Civil Administration.
