IDF dog finds arms concealed in mattress

During operation in West Bank, IDF dog succeeds where soldiers fail, runs to bedroom, reveals concealed arms, munitions

The resourcefulness of one IDF's dogs led to the discovery of a weapon cache: During a military operation conducted Wednesday night in a Palestinian village near Nablus, a soldier in the IDF's Oketz Unit discovered – with the aid of her military canine – a firearm and munition concealed in the house of a Palestinian suspected of terrorist activities.

Givati Brigade soldiers, together with the IDF's Oketz Canine Unit raided the village of Bita Al Fuka, not far from Nablus, early Thursday morning after receiving intelligence information regarding a suspected terrorist. Upon finding the suspect's home, they took the man into their custody and then intended to leave the house, but the dog refused to budge. His refusal prompted his master to search the suspect's bed and cut the mattress open, revealing the concealed arms.

By refusing to leave the house, the dog in fact impelled its master to search the bed. Members of the unit then cut the mattress open and began searching within it, where they found – between the mattress's coils – the firearm and munitions.

The suspect was taken in for questioning and the IDF said that no one was injured during the arrest operation.

Recently, the West Bank region south of Hebron has become a hotspot of terrorist activities targeting Israeli vehicles, and actions – like that undertaken Wednesday night – by the Shin Bet and the IDF work to prevent future attacks.
