The Extended Range Artillery – or EXTRA – rocket, which boasts one of the longest ranges in the world, will be presented Tuesday for the first time in a security conference in Israel.
The rocket has a maximum range of 150 km and an accuracy of up to ten meters.
EXTRA was developed by Israel Military Industries and has already been purchased by a number of forrgien armies, though the IDF has yet to make an order of the rockets.
A test fire was filmed some months ago in the south, with the rocket being documented being launched from the back of a truck and demolishing its target dozens of kilmoters away.
EXTRA shells are 300 mm in diameter and a little less than four meters in length. Packing a 120 kg warhead specially designed to hit underground targets, it is guided by a built-in GPS system, and thus gives the IDF, should it purchase the rocket, the ability to reach any target in south of Beirut.
The IDF currently has an arsenal of highly accurate long range rockets, capable of reaching targets dozens of kilometers away, in addition to mobile artillery forces. According to IDF plans, there will be a shift to long range rockets by the artillery corps in a bid to assist the IAF.
In addition to the EXTRA, the IMI developed "Magic Spear" three years ago, a rocket with a range of 40km.
