Syrian air raids target rebel-held town in northwest

BEIRUT - Syrian government aircraft bombed a northwestern town recently captured by Islamic rebel fighters on Sunday, according to Syrian activists.

The Local Coordination Committees activist collective and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrikes targeted the town of Jisr al-Shughour in Idlib province. There was no immediate word on casualties.

The al-Qaeda-affiliated Nusra Front and hard-line rebels seized control of the town on Saturday as part of a broader offensive in the region, less than a month after the rebels captured Idlib city, the provincial capital.

The Observatory said at least 27 people, including at least 20 fighters, were killed in government air raids Saturday on Jisr al-Shughour.
