Lod resident suspected of lighting up fireworks during Memorial Day siren
Police arrest 37-year-old man after central city's residents complain of fireworks interrupting one-minute siren in memory of Israel's fallen soldiers.'
The Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court extended the suspect's remand Wednesday afternoon.
Lod Mayor Yair Revivo said Tuesday after attending a local memorial ceremony that "police forces raided a home in the train neighborhood and I can assure you that the hand which lit up the fireworks is going to curse the day it was born.
"Whoever did this crossed a line, and that's something we can’t accept," Revivo added. "They have kites and fireworks, but we have a glorious state. Tomorrow evening, God willing, we will have fireworks of respect and pride. They have their wretchedness and we have our victory."
Avi Gil, director of Lod's community centers network, and Faten al-Zinati, director of the city's Jewish-Arab community center, issued the following statement following the incident: "We condemn the launching of fireworks during the Memorial Day ceremony. This defying act by radicals from one population, and the inappropriate calls that followed from radicals from the other population, should be condemned and are aimed at harming the joint fabric of life in Israel and in the city of Lod."
