Palestinian prisoners riot over death of fellow inmate

Aziz Awisat, sentenced to 30 years after trying to blow up a building in Jerusalem, died of a heart condition; news of his death caused prisoners to start shouting and banging on doors at the Eshel, Ktzi'ot and Gilboa prisons.

Palestinian security prisoners rioted at Israeli jails on Sunday, shouting and banging on doors in protest of the death of a fellow inmate.

Aziz Awisat, 54, of Jabel Mukaber, died of a heart condition at the Yitzhak Shamir Medical Center (formerly Assaf Harofeh Medical Center).

The Hamas-linked inmate was sentenced to 30 years in prison four years ago for trying to blow up a building in the East Talpiot (Armon HaNetziv) neighborhood in Jerusalem by cutting gas pipes.

Two weeks ago, Awisat attacked a prison guard at the Eshel Prison in Be'er Sheva by pouring boiling water over him. The guard suffered burns all over his body.

The news of his death spread through the Eshel and Ktzi'ot prisons, where other prisoners started rioting in protest. Later, prisoners from three cell blocks at the Gilboa Prison also joined the protest.
