New law amendment says only Security Cabinet can declare war
The Knesset Plenum passed in the first reading on Monday the amendment to the proposed “Basic Law: The Government”, which will cancel a recently passed clause which allowed the prime minister and defense minister to declare war.
According to the proposal, the decision to either go to war or conduct a military operation will be made by the Security Cabinet.
The law’s initiator, Minister of Justice Ayelet Shaked, said “This law is required. For many years the decision to go to war has been made by the Security Cabinet.”
