JERUSALEM - Egypt is fanning the flames of anti-Semitism intead of curbing the phenomenon, former ambassador to Egypt Eli Shaked says. Shaked was responding to a document compiled by the Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, which probed the incitement appearing in the news edition of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion circulated in Egypt. “The Egyptian government is aware of the incitement and is doing nothing to stop it, incitement is conveniently lowered and heightened,” Shaked said. Meanwhile, Israel is depicted in the Egyptian media in the best of the Der Sturrmer Nazi newspaper tradition, he said. “This is the media whose chief editors are personally appointed by President Hosni Mubarak and whose journalists are paid by the state,” Shaked said. Shaked also criticized Israel by saying incitement has been going on for years without interruption, while Israel did nothing to prevent it. The first book quoted in the center’s document is titled “The Jewish Threat – the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.” “Dear reader,” it says, “look after this copy, the Jews would wage an all-out war each time this book appeared anywhere in any language. Try to collect all copies and burn them at all costs. This is so the world is not exposed to the Jew’s satanic conspiracies written here against us and exposed in their nakedness.” The tenth edition of the book was published in Egypt in 2003. According to the said document, the proliferation of new copies reflects the growing demand for blatant anti-Semitic material.
