"My term in office was terminated unjustly," outgoing Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Moshe (Bugi) Yaalon told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Tuesday when asked to outline the circumstances of his early departure. Yaalon said he was "shocked" when the prime minister said Mofaz was unhappy. "Sharon (said) that Mofaz can't work with me," he said. Yaalon added that he was perceived as someone who had not come to terms with the disengagement plan. "It's just not true," he said. Slams Mofaz At the end of the week the chief of staff had publicly slammed his opponents, directing his criticism towards Mofaz. "I favor a long cooling off period between military and political posts," he said. "From my time as chief of staff, I can say how much damage was caused to the army by politicians who view me as a threat," he told a business conference in Haifa last week. Last month, the defense minister stunned IDF brass when he announced that Yaalon's term as chief of staff would not be extended. It is the first time in Israeli history that an army chief has been removed from office without serving a fourth year. Yaalon devoted a major part of his speech to IDF activities in the territories. He said we should not be misled by the current calm. If Palestinian Authority leader Mahmoud Abbas does not disarm the Palestinian factions, the Israel-Palestinian conflict will not end. "Under cover of calm, the organizations are rearming and manufacturing explosives," he said.
