Bull joins Purim party

Police officers deployed in city of Rehovot face unusual intruder; bull captured after 40 minutes

REHOVOT - Unexpected guest: A bull that escaped from a competition at a kibbutz stirred panic in Rehovot after making its way to the town’s main street during Friday’s Purim celebrations.

The bull was captured by cowboys and a passerby, who used a lasso. A crane was then used to lift the animal onto a truck and send it back to the kibbutz.

A disaster was fortunately averted by the presence of the local police chief, Alon Levavi, who happened to be at the scene and called in reinforcements. Police, who were deployed in force because of Purim, promptly blocked roads in the area, preventing the bull from hurting local residents.

No Purim costume

“I saw it and couldn’t believe it,” Levavi said later. “I suddenly saw a big bull walking on the sidewalk and on the road, and attempting to ram people and several cars that got in its way.”

Levavi said he quickly realized what he was seeing was no Purim costume.

“I told the guys on the two-way radio that they won’t believe what I’m about to tell them, but I have a real bull here running loose in the middle of the street,” he said.

The incident ended without injuries, but Levavi said the outcome could have been tragic.

“We are talking about a large animal that can certainly hurt people,” he said.
