Fishermen catch huge shark

Giant shark caught off southern town of Ashdod; later sold to restaurants across country

ASHDOD - Fishermen in the southern town of Ashdod caught three Sharks in recent days, including one that was five-meter-long (about 16 feet,) Ynet has found.

The two other sharks were much smaller, weighing about 50 kilograms (110 pounds) each.

Meanwhile, local Beaches Department Head Meir Ben-Gozi reassured residents there was nothing to fear.

“The sharks in the Mediterranean Sea are very friendly…and won’t hurt people,” he said.

Shark sold to restaurants

The large shark was caught by a crew working with Patrick Jano, who owns a fishing company in Ashdod.

“Sharks are caught here every few days, but usually much smaller ones,” he said.

The crew itself was surprised to discover it caught such a huge shark, Jano said.

“At one point we were certain it’s some kind of object that hit the boat and could have caused serious damage,” he said, and characterized the giant shark as “something never before seen in the area.”

One of the shark’s teeth was caught in the net, but bringing him up was almost impossible, Jano said. Eventually, a powerful vehicle had to be used to complete the task.

The shark, just like other sharks caught in the area, was sold to restaurants across the country that serve shark meat.
