IDF Golani troops arrested three armed Palestinians trying to smuggle arms into Israel from the Egyptian side of the border near Rafah in the Gaza Strip Wednesday. IDF troops apprehended the Palestinians and the large amount of weapons and magazines found in their possession were confiscated. Troops found a sack containing dozens of Kalashnikov rifles, hand guns, bullet magazines and bullets. The trio were detained for questioning. The arrest was the second in less than a day for Golani troops. Tuesday, armed Palestinians tried to cross the border between Israel and Egypt with 29 guns, 67 magazines and two sniper rifles. During the operation, Palestinians had opened fire towards IDF troops. No injuries or damage were reported. IDF troops returned fire. Last week, Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz expressed his concern at the weekly cabinet meeting over the smuggling of anti-aircraft Strella missiles into the Strip. The shoulder-held Strella missiles have a range of more than three kilometers (close to 2 miles) and hone in on aircraft through a heat sensor. “Following the (events) we have conveyed a message to the Authority to put their hands on the Strella missiles. Such activity is viewed as crossing a red line.” Mofaz said. “I have warned the Palestinians to put their hands on the Strella missiles. Our demands of the Palestinians have not yet been met, and therefore I have ordered preparations for the transfer of security control in Qalqilya, but the transfer will be put on hold," said Mofaz In December of last year Prime Minister Ariel Sharon also warned that such arms smuggling intelligence had reached the defense establishment.
