Shalom reveals new ‘road map’

Meets with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo, asks him to exercise his influence on Palestinians so terrorists would not set agenda

CAIRO - Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom presented Monday a new “Road Map” for the advancement of relations between Israel and Arab countries during a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo.

Shalom refrained from giving out the plan's details, but said it is aimed at establishing Israeli ties with at least 10 additional Arab countries.

During the meeting, which took place at Mubarak’s presidential palace and lasted an hour and a half, Shalom and Mubarak discussed Ariel Sharon’s U.S visit, the expected withdrawal from Gaza, and the U.S.- backed Road Map for Peace.

Later Shalom told reporters both Israel and Egypt would benefit from the advancement of peace between Israel and additional Middle East countries.

He added that he and Mubarak had also discussed the possibility of removing the danger that stems from the terrorists and advance peace in the region.

Shalom also called on Mubarak to exercise his influence on the Palestinians so the agenda would be set by Palestinian moderates, and not by the extremists and terrorists.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit also took part in the meeting.

Shalom is also scheduled to meet Egyptian Intelligence Head Omar Suleiman.
