Brit milah ends in hospital

2 boys injured in brit mishaps

Mohel cuts baby too deep, unable to stop bleeding ; second case may be medical-related

PETAH TIKVA  - Two children were rushed to Schneider Hospital Tuesday following complications from their brit milah (circumcision) ceremonies.

The first case took place Tuesday, when a mohel (ritual circumciser) apparently cut the child’s penis too deeply, causing blood to gush out. The mohel then tried for half an hour to stop the bleeding, without success. Finally, an ambulance was called.

“We arrived at the hall to find massive bleeding that couldn't be stopped,” said Eyal Okashi, a paramedic who had answered the call. "We figured out that the boy’s penis had been cut too deeply. The baby was calm and conscious, but couldn’t stop crying.”

A Magen David Adom crew administered first aid at the scene before taking the injured boy to a hospital.

The parents brought with them the severed portion, which they gave to the doctors. Meanwhile, the baby was taken into surgery, in an attempt to stop the bleeding, close the wound and recreate the penis.

A spokesman for Schneider Hospital told Ynet the baby is in good condition but remained hospitalized. It is as yet unclear whether he suffered permanent damage.

Second incident

In addition, a Magen David Adom crew was also called on Tuesday to the West Bank town of Ariel when a mohel couldn’t stop a baby from bleeding in a similar case. The boy was also taken to Schneider Hospital but did not require surgery.

A hospital spokesman said the second case may be related to a medical condition, rather than the mohel's incompetence.
