Mubarak to visit in November

Egyptian president to attend Rabin memorial may drop by for visit at Sharon’s Negev ranch; King Abdullah disappoints, will not arrive for visit

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will arrive in Israel for a visit in November, where he will take part in a memorial ceremony to mark 10 years since the assassination of late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

During his visit, Mubarak may drop by for a visit at Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s private residence, the Sycamore Ranch, according to Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom.

Shalom was speaking to the Knesset Foreign Affairs Committee, where he updated Knesset members on the latest diplomatic developments.

According to the foreign minister, “chances are slim” that King Abdullah of Jordan will visit Israel in the coming weeks, as previously reported, and attempts are being made to arrange a meeting between the Israeli and Jordanian leaders during the United Nations Assembly later this month in New York.

'Fruits of disengagement'

The upcoming diplomatic meetings are part of the “fruits of disengagement,” according to the foreign minister, who added that that his office has been in contact with the Arab and Muslim world.

The foreign minister himself will set off shortly for a visit with his counterpart in Tunis.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Palestinian Preventative Security Force toured passages leading to razed Jewish settlements, ahead of the IDF’s exit from the area and the transferring of Gaza to Palestinian control.

In the coming days, the army will hand over maps and public building designs that have been left standing to the Palestinians.

During his address to the Knesset committee, Shalom also addressed the Palestinian diplomatic channel. He described the territorial demands made by Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas as “unrealistic and extreme,” adding that they “do not advance any possibility of dialogue.”
