'We'll prove our democracy'

Egypt wraps up first multi-candidate campaign, says 'transparent, fair' elections will show world the country can act democratically

Egypt's Information Minister, Anas El Fiky said Tuesday the country's first multi-candidate elections were ready to go.

"The election campaign was completely transparent and above board. Now, our main mission for us and the media is to bring about the maximum number of Egyptians to vote," he said.

El Fiky added that he could not predict how many of the country's 32 million eligible voters would turn out for the historic poll, and also refused to say how the government would measure success in the endeavor.

Egyptian Prime Minister Ahmed Nazeef also addressed the press conference, saying, "this country has 7,000 years of proud culture is proud to prove to the world that it can conduct its affairs democratically and can run a democratic, open and fair campaign."

Naseef added, "Wednesday will be a historic day for Egypt. The elections apparatus is very transparent and very fair. The best proof of that will be the largest possible turnout to take part in the election process."
