Who will replace Peretz?

Newly-elected Labor Chairman Amir Peretz likely to quit post as head of Histadrut trade union federation, apparently to be replaced by Trade Union Division Chairman Ofer Eini

After he was elected chairman of the Labor party on Wednesday, Amir Peretz currently holds two prominent positions: one as head of his party, the other as chairman of the Histadrut trade union federation.

While there are no legal obstacles to prevent Peretz from maintaining both posts, sources at the Histadrut estimate he is likely to announce his resignation from the organization soon.

"Peretz has said in the past that he does not believe he can hold on to both positions for long," a source at the Histadrut said. "The rumor is he is expected to leave," he added.

According to the Histadrut's regulations, the organization's leadership in cooperation with Peretz, must elect a temporary chairman to replace Peretz until the Histadrut elections are held a year-and-a-half from now.

Once a chairman is elected, his appointment needs to be approved by a body of Histadrut elected representatives.

Sources at the Histadrut predict that Ofer Eini, who is currently the head of the trade union division at the Histadrut, will be elected to replace Peretz.

Eini, who for many years held the post of chairman of the tax authority trade union, joined the Histadrut leadership seven years ago as secretary of the civil servants trade union.

Last year Eini was appointed chairman of the trade union division, the organization's highest ranking post save for chairman.
