'Arab schools must teach Zeevi's heritage'

Israeli Arab Knesset Member furious to discover Zeevi Heritage Law is applicable to Arab schools; Arab MK: Education minister has turned the ministry into a center for nationalism, violence, and corruption

The legacy of Rehavam Zeevi will be also be taught at Arab schools, according to Deupty Education Minister Magali Wahaba, who was responding to a question by MK Mohammad Barakeh, (Hadash-Ta`al).

Knesset Member Barakeh said: “The Knesset passed a motion for the commemoration of the memory of Rehavam Zeevi and the law has entered the law book. Will the law also be applied on the Arab education system?”

Magali replied: “In general, as Knesset Member Barakeh surely knows, every law legislated by the Knesset and which enters the law book of the State of Israel, is valid for all the citizens of the state.”

Barakeh was furious with the answer, saying: “The education minister has turned the ministry into a center for nationalism, violence, and corruption. I hope this woman (Limor Livnat) gets out of political life. The idea of transfer, even if it tops the law book, belongs in the garbage.”

The Zeevi law was passed on July 11 via three readings. The law calls for the government to set up a committee of 11 members whose role will be to advise the prime minister on the application of the law, and to set up educational activity aimed at teaching the geography of the land and the history of the Israeli people.

Rehavam Zeevi publicly backed a forced transfer of Palestinian Arabs to neighboring Arab countries.

He was assassinated by Palestinian terrorists in October 2001.
