The murderer of late prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, Yigal Amir, and his partner Larissa Trimbobler filed a petition to the High Court of Justice on Thursday demanding the Ministry of Interior recognizes their marital status.

Four months ago a Jerusalem Rabbinical court ruled the couple is husband and wife under Jewish law. Amir had blessed his wife in accordance with rabbinical edicts using his father as a messenger.

The Association of Civil Rights in Israel approached the Interior Ministry and the Attorney-General’s Office demanding Amir and Trimbobler be registered as husband and wife in the Civil Registrar.

In the petition Attorney Shmuel Casper argued that the Ministry of Interior has been holding recognition of the marriage for four months despite the rabbinical ruling.

The High Court had previously rejected a petition by the couple demanding they’d be allowed to unite in Amir’s prison cell.

Amir grabbed the headlines in August when he sent a letter to the Prison Service demanding permission to have fertility treatments. The service turned down the request arguing that the demand is Amir’s latest ploy to circumvent a ban on conjugal visits.

The Prison Service argued in addition that Amir is classified as a security prisoner in accordance with a High Court ruling and therefore he is not allowed vacations, conjugal visits or fertility treatments.
