Shimon Peres will apparently be placed second on Kadima’s list ahead of the March elections, according to a deal that was struck in recent days between Peres, party chairman and Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni.
Peres is expected to back Olmert in the elections in exchange for the number two spot.
Channel 2 TV reported that Livni will be appointed foreign minister should Kadima form the next government.
'Sharon may still have the final word'
Livni was consulted on the matter as she was initially designated for the number two position.
“Livni gave up the second spot for the sake of the party,” a senior Kadima official said.
In addition to the Foreign Ministry, Livni will hold the third place on Kadima’s list of parliamentary candidates for the seventeenth Knesset. Olmert informed senior Kadima officials of the deal which he helped broker.
A senior Kadima official said the political deal is not final, warning of possible changes to Kadima’s formation ahead of the March 28 elections.
The official said should Prime Minister Ariel Sharon show sufficient lucidity he will have the final word on who’s who in Kadima, even if he is ruled unfit to lead the party.
Peres, Olmert and Livni have not commented on the report.
