Settlers vow to defend outpost

Settler families move into structures designated for demolition, prepare for standoff

Nine settler families moved into structures designated for demolition at the West Bank Amona outpost Wednesday, in a bid to prevent IDF forces from tearing down the buildings.

"We shall fight as if any ruined structure equals a settlement the government wants to uproot. This is the first step in the struggle for Judea and Samaria," a Yesha council official said Wednesday.

Some 40 families reside at the Amona outpost, in caravans and temporary structures. A kindergarten, a synagogue and a mikveh (Jewish ritual bath) also operate at the community. About two years ago, Amona residents started constructing permanent buildings at the settlement and claim to have received permits from the Housing and Construction Ministry.

In May last year, nine families moved into the houses but were forced out shortly thereafter, following public pressure by left-wing organizations, a petition by Peace Now to the High Court of Justice, and the stance of the security establishment, which considered the construction illegal in the first place.

As a result, the families moved back to living in caravans.

According to the settlers, they proposed that the buildings be sealed until an agreement on the matter is reached, but security and legal officials were reluctant to compromise.

Amona residents further claim they have information indicating that large army forces are scheduled to raid the outpost and demolish the structures some time in the beginning of next week.

Settlers expect that two IDF divisions will arrive at the place, and plan to be ready for them. The Yesha council has already formed a headquarters to coordinate the struggle against the planned demolition, and is set to hold a press conference at the settlement Wednesday.

"This is the first step in the settlers' determined struggle to prevent the houses from being destroyed. The army broke its promise to refrain from tearing down houses, so we see ourselves free from our commitment not to occupy the structures," an Amona settler said.
