‘IDF didn’t anticipate harsh Amona resistance’

Central Command Chief Yair Naveh tells Knesset committee that evacuating forces at Amona would have acted differently had they been warned of tough resistance by protesters. Labor decides to oppose establishment of parliamentary committee to probe police conduct at illegal West Bank outpost

IDF Central Command Major-General Yair Naveh told the Knesset’s Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Wednesday that IDF troops who took part in the evacuation of Amona last Wednesday did not anticipate the staunch resistance displayed by settlers.

Naveh added that troops would have acted differently had they been warned of tough resistance by the protesters.

Security officials are briefing committee members on the evacuation, showing compiled footage proving that evacuation forces acted appropriately and did not use excessive force against settlers.

MK Effie Eitam, who sustained head injuries during the evacuation, will present the committee with footage that contradicts police and IDF claims.

Right disappointed by Labor decision

The Knesset plenum will convene Tuesday afternoon to vote on a motion by right-wing parties to set up a parliamentary committee to investigate allegations of excessive police force against settlers in Amona.

Labor Chairman Amir Peretz has instructed party members to vote against the establishment of an investigative committee into the Amona evacuation riots.

“(Acting Prime Minister) Ehud Olmert is the only one who failed, and it is his considerations and actions that should be examined so the public will be able to determine whether he can function under pressure,” Peretz said, adding that Labor demands the continued dismantling of illegal outposts.

Right-wing sources told Ynet about their disappointment with labor’s decision to vote against the motion, especially after they guaranteed earlier this week to back the establishment of an investigation committee.

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he will not allow the establishment of a parliamentary committee. But Attorney-General Menachem Mazuz said this week that there are no legal restraints on the Knesset plenum to hold an emergency session on the motion while it is dispersed ahead of the general elections on March 28.
