GM buying more from Israeli firms

In 2005 General Motors bought USD 102 million in products and services from Israeli companies, far more than reciprocal sales deal with Israel obligates

General Motors purchased USD 102 million worth of products from Israeli companies in 2005, a 32 percent increase compared to 2004.

Purchases last year show a significant increase since earlier years, which totaled USD 73 million in 2003 and USD 60 million in 2002.

Currently there are 16 Israeli companies that supply General Motors with goods and services, three of which made sales of over USD 2.5 million to GM and 12 of which sold over USD 1 million to the company. In 2005 Tier 1 purchases from suppliers summed about USD 71.5 million.

General Motors’ buying activity in Israeli is done through GM-UNIT, which works to locate suppliers and purchasing opportunities in Israel and aiding existing Tier 1 and 2 providers.

GM-UNIT CEO Benny Kedar said that GM was making much greater purchases in Israel than the amounts it was obligated to in the framework of its reciprocal sales agreement. “The consistent increase in GM’s purchases in Israel show evidence of its faith in Israel’s industry and product quality, competitive prices and reliability,” Kedar said.

The chief exporters to GM in Israel in 2005 were:

MAG from kibbutz Ein Hashofet – supplies lifting kits for reserve tires.

E-DRIVE – supplies security and vehicle locating systems.

Tadirgan – supplies aluminum casting systems.
