Car explodes in Gaza City, one dead

Car explodes in Gaza City , killing one person, witnesses say; IDF say it is not involved in incident

A car exploded in Gaza City on Tuesday close to the office of Palestinian Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, killing one person and wounding several others, witnesses said.

The Israel Defense Forces said it was not involved in the incident, which follows heightened Israeli-Palestinian tensions over the abduction of an Israeli soldier by Palestinian gunmen from Gaza.

Israel has been massing tanks and troops near Gaza for a threatened offensive against Palestinian groups while the government has also said it would target leaders of the governing Hamas movement if the kidnapped soldier was not freed.

Palestinian sources said the incident was part of Palestinian internal strife. A power struggle between rivals Hamas and Fatah resulted in a series of deadly attacks targeting officials from both parties.

Two Palestinians were killed and eight others were injured last week when a missile fired by the Israel Air Force strayed from its target, exploding in the home of a Palestinian family.

News agencies contributed to the report.
