VIDEO - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert launched
on Monday the United Jewish Communities – Federations of North America (UJC) Emergency Campaign in a broadcast from Jerusalem.
The Emergency Campaign is set to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for Israel. Karnit Goldwasser, wife of abducted soldier Ehud Goldwasser, also took part in the broadcast.
“I know you are all thinking we are fighting against Hizbullah;
let’s face it, the State of Israel is
fighting against the Iranians and the Syrians, who are using Hizbullah in order to attack Israel from the north,” Olmert said during the broadcast.
“This is a war which is fought by all the Israelis. I believe that this is a war fought by all the Jews. This is the time when all of us can show the kind of solidarity which is so unique to the Jewish people. This is the time when we expect you, our friends from across all the communities in America and in the world, to come over here, and share with us the burden and the challenge.”
'Aid for rebuilding northern Israel'
Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak is expected to arrive in the US next week for a tour of several Jewish Federations and take part in events attended by the leaders of North American Jewish Communities.
The Goldwasser family, including Karnit and Ehud’s father, are now making their tour in various communities.
Other speakers will include soldiers who had been injured, military commentators, residents of northern Israel who are involved in UJC projects, and new immigrants.
Up to this point, the Federations have raised over USD 57 million.
Nachman Shai, Senior VP and DG of UJC Israel, said recently “The Jewish community of North America is mobilizing in an unprecedented Emergency Campaign, to aid the Israeli home front which has been under fire these past four weeks. The aid will address both immediate needs and the long-term needs of rebuilding the northern region of Israel at the end of the war.”
