PM set to order probe into war

According to estimations, Olmert inclined to establish governmental commission of inquiry so that he will be able to determine its composition

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert is about to announce the establishment of a commission that will look into the war failures.

Olmert is inclined to establish a governmental commission of inquiry, so that he will be able to determine the committee's composition and the mandate it will be given, as opposed to a state commission of inquiry, the composition of which will be determined by the Supreme Court president.

It appears, however, that the prime minister is interested in providing a governmental commission of inquiry with many authorities, as well as the possibility to look into the political echelon's decision making, in addition to an examination of the army and the home front's preparedness.

The prime minister is expected Monday evening to deliver a speech in front of heads of local authorities in the north. According to estimates, Olmert is expected to talk about the lessons that have to be drawn from the war, and may announce that the investigation of the war in Lebanon will be carried out in a governmental commission of inquiry.

"How long can we wait? We have to make a decision, announce it and continue to rehabilitate the north. Most chances are that Olmert will announce it at the local authority heads conference in the north this evening, although there is a possibility that it would be postponed till tomorrow," a source in Jerusalem said.
