Israel Prize laureate seriously hurt in traffic accident

Laureate of Israel Prize for Jewish philosophy research, Prof. Aviezer Ravitzky hit by bus while crossing junction in Jerusalem

Professor Aviezer (Avi) Ravitzky, Israel Prize laureate and a member of the Medicine Basket committee, was seriously injured in a traffic accident in Jerusalem Monday.

Ravitzky, 61, was hit by a bus while he was crossing the street. He was evacuated to the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital with a head injury. The circumstances of the accident are currently being investigated by the Jerusalem police.

The bus driver was detained by the police for interrogation and later released for a 48-hour house arrest. The driver's license has been revoked for 90 days.

Dr. Ricky Kaplan, who was first to arrive at the scene of the accident, told Ynet: "We received a report about a traffic accident and when we got there we saw a man lying on the road unconscious, breathing on his own, and suffering from a head injury. We immobilized his head and drove straight to the Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital, where he was immediately transferred to the trauma unit."

Prof. Ravitzky was awarded the Israel Prize for his research in Jewish philosophy. He is one of the founders of the religious Zionist peace organization Oz VeShalom-Netivot Shalom, and a member of the Meimad movement. He has been serving as chairman of the movement since 2000.
