Kidnapped troops' families: Germans listened to us

Bundestag members meet with families of kidnapped IDF soldiers in Kiryat Shmona to discuss their release. Karnit Goldwasser says after meeting, 'I hope German delegation will receive information from Lahoud and Siniora on the sons. For us every meeting like this is good opportunity to advance the cause'

A delegation of members of the German Parliament visited the northern city of Kiryat Shmona on Sunday and met with the families of kidnapped soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser and with city officials.

The members of the delegation, headed by Walter Krauder, are all members of the Christian Democrat Party, and are said to be close to Chancellor Angela Merkel.

During the meeting, the families of the kidnapped soldiers appealed to the German delegation and asked them to exert pressure on Lebanon to release the kidnapped soldiers.

Karnit Goldwasser, the wife of Ehud Goldwasser, said after the meeting that she would meet with anyone who will listen to them for the purpose of relaying the message that they must implement their part of resolution 1701 just as Israel did.

Karnit Goldwasser said after the meeting that "I was rejected by Lebanese president Emil Lahud and I hope that the German delegates will meet him as well as Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri in an effort to get more information on Udi and Eldad. For us, every meeting is a chance to advance the issue. For Udi and Eldad, this is one day less in prison."

Zvi Regev, father of Eldad Regev said at the end of the meeting that "this was a decent meeting which allowed us to speak about the subject in detail, while someone was listening."

The German delegates said at the outset of the meeting that this was an important meeting designed to study the problem, but they refused to comment about the contents of the meeting and promised to speak about it in length only after their additional meetings they are planning with Prime Minister Olmert, cabinet ministers and Knesset members in the coming days.

The families commented that in the coming weeks several European diplomatic delegations are due to arrive in Israel to meet them in order to get additional information from their loved ones and promote their release.
