Nadia Cohen: Talk to Assad before I go to my grave

Israeli spy Eli Cohen's widow calls on PM Olmert to take up opportunity with Syria, bring home her husband's bones

Nadia Cohen, the widow of Israeli spy to Syria Eli Cohen, called upon Prime Minister Ehud Olmert Sunday evening, to take advantage of the opportunity created with Syria for talks, in order to bring her husband's bones back to Israel.

"The treatment of bringing my husband's bones to Israeli is frozen. Now, there is a golden opportunity to do so, which shouldn’t be missed like all the other times we missed. I think Olmert must take advantage of this opportunity because I doubt there will be another one."

In a direct plea to Israel, Syrian President Bashar Assad said over the weekend: "Take a chance, try us out. We are serious."

Syrian Defense Minister Walid Moallem went so far as to declare that the Golan Heights are no longer a prerequisite for renewing talks.

Cohen said that "it is the State's duty to stand behind every citizen, and I think Olmert must talk with Assad now. What is he waiting for, that I go to my grave? As it is so many of Eli's relatives have already passed away, and his bones still have not come home."

Nadia's husband was executed 41 years ago, when she was only 25 years old, and since then, she has not remarried, and never desired to open a new chapter in her life.

"I feel that he is present with me all the time, in my thoughts and my dreams. But throughout all these years I've felt that we are separated, because his bones are there, in Syria, and I am here in Israel.

"All these years I have not managed to find rest, my thoughts wander there (Syria) I don’t feel like a complete person, I cannot find rest and emotional peace."

Recently, Morris Cohen, Eli Cohen's brother, passed away at age 80. Morris' dream that his brother's bones would be returned to Israel has not come true.
