Italy: Israeli boy killed in ski accident

Twelve-year-old seriously injured while skiing at Italian Alps resort, dies of his wounds in Torino hospital

Ynet learned on Saturday that a 12-year-old Israeli boy was killed in a ski accident at the Club Med Cervinia ski resort in the Italian Alps.

The child, who was seriously injured, was evacuated to a hospital in the city of Torino, where he died of his wounds.

The police officer on duty in Aosta, the district in charge of Cervinia, told Ynet that the boy injured his head while skiing without a helment.

According to the officer, "He encountered an obstacle in the route, and then stumbled and hit his head hard. The case is under investigation and the investigating officer was sent to the hospital in Torino."

The official added that the officer in charge of investigating the incident is making his way to the hospital in Torino.

An investigation carried out by the foreign ministry revealed that the boy had hit his head on a poll at the cable car station, while skiing down the mountain.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed the details and reported that Israel's Consul in Italy Ofer Mazar was with the child's father and the two were working to bring the body to Israel.

Cervinia, one of the highest-altitude resorts in Italy, is popular among avid skiers due to its good snow conditions.

A number of skiing accidents took place at the beginning of 2006: A 30-year-old man was killed in an avalanche that occurred near a ski resort in the Raggedtop Mountain area in Alaska; another skier was killed during an avalanche in the Alps, while seven skiers were injured during an avalanche in the Bavarian Alps in south Germany.
