Search for Palestinian runaway ends

Police remove roadblocks, end search for escaped 17-year-old prisoner

Police ended the search Monday for a 17 year-old Palestinian boy who escaped from the Petach Tikva Magistrates' Court Sunday.

Police also removed roadblocks set up along the Seam Line in order to prevent the boy from entering the Palestinian Authority. Police reported that his investigation had been transferred to the intelligence level.

The boy, an illegal resident, escaped the police while his legs were cuffed and entered a getaway car that was later found abandoned.

Preliminary investigations showed that the suspect was being accompanied to a police squad car when he jumped a nearby fence and ran towards the getaway car.

The court’s security officers spotted the teen and proceeded to open fire at the fleeing vehicle after the driver attempted to run them over; one bullet apparently struck the car.

Police officers began to chase after the Palestinian and during a search of the area found the abandoned car, but no suspects were spotted at the scene.

Since the escape of convicted rapist Benny Sela in November, police procedures regarding the transport of prisoners have been reconsidered.

A committee investigating Sela’s escape suggested handing the responsibility of transporting prisoners to Shin Beit.
