New Yorkers pay off debts in Sderot

Persian Jews pay off Sderot's shopping debts

The generosity of New York's Persian Jews did not go unnoticed Sunday, when the community's representatives arrived in Sderot to pay off residents' debts to shopkeepers.

Moshe Samucha and Carmel Elazar, representatives of the Persian Jewish community in New York, visited 12 mini-markets in the Qassam stricken town, asking the store owners for their list of those in debt.

The two then paid off the debts in cash, and reported that in total they paid USD 28,000 for all 12 stores.

"Sderot's residents are good Jews that got into trouble because of the Qassams," said Elazar, "eliminating their debts is the least we could do for them."

The shopkeepers have not ceased thanking them, "they are angels from heaven," said Dudu, one of the shopkeepers who was paid NIS 5,000 (about USD 1,100) for other people's debts.

"Only because of people like this are we able to survive here," he said.
