Feldman to replace Libai as Katsav's attorney

Renowned criminal attorney Avigdor Feldman agrees to step in as president's new defense counsel following Prof. Libai's resignation

Attorney Avigdor Feldman has accepted President Moshe Katsav's request Sunday evening to serve as his defense counsel, following the resignation of Katsav's former attorney, Prof. David Libai.

Libai announced his resignation Sunday afternoon.

Feldman, one of the most renowned attorneys in the country, represented in the past Colonel Atef Zahar, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a subordinate, and was sentenced to eight months and prison and a demotion.

Following a conversation between Libai and Katsav Sunday, the president's office issued a statement saying that the two "agreed Katsav will not longer be represented by Attorney Libai."

"The decision was made a week ago, before Attorney Libai was presented with the investigation material," the statement continued.

It was also reported that Libai will be replaced in the coming days by another lawyer, and that Prof. Libai will continue to assist President Katsav and his counsels if necessary.

Libai's resignation "will not weaken (the president's) struggle and his determination to reveal the truth and his innocence," the statement concluded.
