The Egyptian mediators involved in negotiating the release of kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit had transferred his personal eyeglasses to his captors, who had given them to Shalit, Palestinian sources told the Israeli-Arab newspaper al-Sinara.

Shalit's father, Noam, had sent his son the glasses over two months ago, and the pair was given to Gilad about two weeks ago.

Noam Shalit told al-Sinara that the transfer of the glasses to his son was a positive sign, but that more significant steps were required. "I asked the Egyptians to bring the glasses to my son, but what I want is a sign that he's alive, and for a neutral agent to meet him, but so far to no avail."

However, Abu Mujahid, s spokesman for the Popular Resistance Committees in Gaza, which is one of the organizations holding Shalit, said that the report was purely "speculation."

"We shall not talk about the soldier and the negotiations, in compliance with the request of our Egyptians brothers," he stated. Abu Mujahad also called on the Arab and international media to focus its attention on the suffering of the thousands of Palestinian prisoners held in Israel, and not only on Shalit.
