The Dead Sea Works seeks to extend its permit allowing it to direct sewage into the Dead Sea

It seems that the Dead Sea Works company is not only considered one of the major causes for the drying out of the Dead Sea, but is also responsible for polluting it by emptying sewage and waste into the sea.

The Dead Sea is one of Israel's most beautiful and  neglected wonders of nature. As was revealed by Yedioth Ahronoth, a special commission of the Environment Protection Ministry decided to increase the number of factories that are allowed to pour purified sewage into the sea. Data submitted to the commission reveals that the Dead Sea Works is not connected to the region's sewage system and pours waste through a canal to the dehydrating northern part of the Sea.

For the past few weeks the commission has been considering whether to renew the permit given to the factory.

One of the commission's members, Tamar Keinan, said that "the Dead Sea is an important site on the national, regional and international level. That is why we must stop polluting it. We definitely must not grant new permits."
