Man killed, 3 injured in road accidents in north

August, one of most fatal months on Israeli roads in 2007, ends with another serious accident; 282 people killed since beginning of year

A 68 year old man was killed Friday evening and another person was injured in a head-on accident between two vehicles on Road 4, north of Zichron Yaakov.

 

Magen David Adom crews proclaimed one of the drivers dead and attended to the injured.

 

In another road accident Friday night, two motorcycle riders were moderately to seriously injured in Haifa.

 

Some 130 people were injured in the past 24 hours in 117 road accidents across Israel, according to the MDA national center. Two people were seriously injured, five sustained moderate wounds and 123 were lightly hurt.

 

Since the beginning of the year, 282 people have been killed in road accidents in Israel.

 

An initial police investigation into Friday evening's accident revealed that the driver of a private car veered into the opposite lane for an unknown reason and hit a commercial vehicle. He was killed on the spot.

 

The driver of the commercial vehicle, a 27-year-old Haifa resident, remained trapped in the driver's seat and was rescued in serious condition by rescue forces. After receiving initial medical treatment, he was evacuated to the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.

 

Two men were injured in Haifa on Friday night after the motorcycle they were riding hit a parked car. An MDA crew dispatched to the area evacuated a 25-year-old man to the in serious condition and a 19-year-old boy in moderate condition to the Rambam Medical Center in the city.

 

Earlier Friday night, police arrested a drunk driver who hit an MDA intensive care ambulance on Road 2, near the Atlit Junction. After hitting the vehicle, the driver attacked the crew.

 

August was the deadliest month on northern Israel's roads in 2007, with 21 people killed in accidents, nine of them last weekend. Forty-two people were killed in road accidents across Israel since the beginning of the month.

 

Police official pointed to "the human factor" rather than the road infrastructure as the main reason for the fatal accidents.
