Zelekha asks comptroller to help prevent his dismissal

Accountant-general wants Lindenstrauss to issue injunction against the non-extension of his contract

Finance Ministry Accountant-General Yaron Zelekha asked State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss to issue an injunction preventing his dismissal.

Finance Minister Ronnie Bar-On informed Zelekha last week that his four-year contract would not be extended by another year.

Zelekha, who is the main witness in the investigation against Prime Minister Ehud Olmert over his involvement in the Bank Leumi affair, requested to be formally recognized as "a government official who uncovered corruption," a move that could annul, or at least delay the finance minister's decision to fire him.

In order to issue the said injunction, the comptroller would have to conduct his own investigation into the affair.

According to the finance minister, his decision to fire Zelekha had nothing to do with the latter's ongoing battle against public corruption, but rather with his poor interpersonal relations and tendency to delay projects and tenders. He also stressed that the accountant-general's contract has ended, and that its extension was merely optional.
