Myanmar forces raid monasteries after opening fire on protesters, killing 1

About 10,000 anti-government protesters gathered in downtown Yangon on Thursday despite a violent crackdown by security forces that drew international appeals for restraint by Myanmar's ruling junta.

Soldiers fired on the crowds with tear gas as the protesters demonstrated their anger over several early morning raids on Buddhist monasteries in which monks were beaten and arrested. (AP)
