Life sentence for Palestinian who murdered security guard

Maher Sasah confessed to murdering security guard Amos Hajaj in 1995 but fled the country soon after an indictment was filed against him, today he was brought to justice

The Tel Aviv District Court on Tuesday sentenced the murderer of a security guard in the mid-90's to life in prison and an additional five-year incarceration term.

The incident occurred over 13 years ago, when Maher Sasah, a resident of the West Bank city of Qalqiliya, and another man lured Amos Hajaj, who was working as a security guard at the time, into their vehicle before killing him and stealing his sidearm.

Hajaj was 23 at the time of his death and resided in Lod.

Sasah managed to slip through the grasp of the Jenin police and fled the country after an indictment was filed against him. He was finally located and arrested three years ago. Sasah was convicted of fleeing custody and the additional five-year jail term handed down to him by the court pertains to that offense.

Sasah was originally arrested immediately after the murder, when he passed through an IDF checkpoint between Azun and Qalqiliya and aroused the suspicion of police officers manning the crossing when they spotted the blood stains on the clothes of one of Sasah's passengers.

Sasah and his accomplice confessed they had murdered a Jew and later led police investigators to the area where they had dumped Hajaj's body and reenacted the murder.
