Omri Sharon goes on 2-day prison leave

Gates of Maasiyahu Prison open Sunday morning and former MK leaves for 48 hours, after serving quarter of his sentence

Two days out. Omri Sharon went on his first leave from the Maasiyahu Prison on Sunday. Sharon, as opposed to many other prisoners, who are not "white collar", will not have to spend the night in house arrest.

Omri Sharon was sent to seven months imprisonment in the Maasiyahu Prison, which is considered a relatively easy prison. He is serving his sentence in a section for prisoners who were sentenced for relatively short periods of time. Some of the prisoners in his section are geriatric patients.

Sharon's participation in prison activities is minor, and he is waiting for the opening of the new round of prisoners who are supposed to take part in the educational activities he is going to run. The Israel Prison Service says that Sharon's behavior is very good and no exceptional occurrences have been documented since his imprisonment.

Sharon submitted a request for leave and withstood the criteria of good behavior allowing a vacation.

Prisoners are permitted to go on leave after serving one fourth of their sentence. A prisoner sentenced to up to eight months – has to serve two months of imprisonment before going on leave.

Criminal prisoners going on vacation have different restrictions, like the obligation of staying on house arrest during the night hours. Omri Sharon won't be subject to these restrictions, because he is considered a "white collar" prisoner. In all cases in which prisoners go on vacation – the police decide upon the limitations and the conditions.

The Israel Prison Service explained that if Sharon returns on time and if he continues to exhibit good behavior – he will be allowed to enter the leave rotation and to submit a request for his next leave. It was noted that Sharon will soon be able to submit a request to the discharge board regarding reducing his punishment by a third. If his request is approved – he will be a free man in two and-a-half months.
