Israeli wines win praise

Prestigious magazine Wine Spectator pays tribute to giant leap by Israeli wine industry

The world's most prestigious wine magazine, Wine Spectator, is set to declare Israel the next big thing in the world of wine in its June issue, Yedioth Ahronoth reported Friday.

The US-based magazine will be dedicating a major article to Israeli wines in its upcoming issue and has lavished some unprecedented praise and high scores on several Israeli wineries.

Wine Spectator's reporter Kim Marcus, who secretly traveled to Israel about two months ago, visited several wineries and sampled some of the country's finest wines. Marcus visited Israel back in 1998 and also graded the local wines at the time, yet no wine managed to score higher than 85 in his previous visit.

This time around, however, three Israeli wines scored an impressive 92 out of 100.

In the article, Marcus says that Israel has made a giant leap when it comes to wine production and today the country has proudly taken its place alongside veteran "wine empires" from around the world. The article also gave high grades to some Golan Heights wineries.

Overall, a total of 14 Israeli wines were graded 90 and above by Marcus.
